In his prefatory essay to A House of Children, Joyce Cary explained that he wanted to write "a book full of that clarity, the large skies, and wide sea views, which belong to the vision of my childhood." In the autobiographical novel that followed, the story of a family of cousins, children of varying ages and perceptions caught up in an Irish summer, he has given us a child's world, where each day is fashioned by the imagination into a thing of intense excitement, and life is filled with wonder, subject to perceptual change.
