The Howdie is the account of the life of a resourceful, self-sufficient and sympathetic woman who earns her living as a midwife following the loss of a dearly-loved husband.
It was first published anonymously in serial form in Tait's Edinburgh Magazine in 1834 and Galt's authorship was only established conclusively as a result of an investigation by William Roughhead in the 1920s.
