LAVINIA RISING is both a retelling and sequel to H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror, as well as a tribute and critique. The narrator is Lavinia Whateley, one of Lovecraft’s rare female characters who was depicted in an ableist light. This novella emphasizes her humanity and weaves a tale that is more introspective as it pertains to her and her “monstrous” sons. LAVINIA RISING is a modern take on the plight of a disabled woman in rural New England amid the threat of supernatural horror.
