The Steppenwolf, originally published in German in 1927 and first translated into English in 1929, is one of the great novels of the 20th century. Hermann Hesse himself thought this novel was "more often and more violently misunderstood" than any of his books. This new translation is exceptionally faithful to the text of the original, and recreates the magical atmosphere in which spirit transcends reality to find that "perhaps man is not simply a halfway rational animal, but a child of God, and destined for immortality."
